Katherine Buzan

Katherine Jane Young Buzan, 93, died August 25, 2017.  Jane, as she was known, was a caring mother, wife, grandmother and community leader. She worked as an RN before raising her five children and, later, in the office of Dr. Nancy Voege. She was a leader for Brownie and Girl Scout troops and served on the troop committee for Alton Boy Scout Troop #1. She hosted many scout campouts at the family farm.

Jane was an active member of the College Avenue Presbyterian Church (now Lovejoy United Presbyterian Church). She was an ordained Deacon and Elder, sang in the choir, and was instrumental in the creation of the popular Friday Night Youth Center.While a member of Saint Anthony’s Hospital Auxiliary, she ran the gift shop. She was also an active supporter of the Alton Symphony Orchestra.She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edwin F. Buzan, Jr., and is survived by her five children and their spouses: Birda and Glenn Ferguson; Jenny Buzan and Steven Cohn; Nancy and Brian White; Forrest and Dawn Buzan; and William Buzan and Erika Warner; by five grandchildren: Kirstin Ferguson Oliveros, Abigail Ferguson, Benjamin Cohn, Jefferson Buzan, and Christopher Buzan; and by many nieces and nephews.Jane Buzan was born on November 28, 1923, in Evanston, Illinois, graduated from Oak Park High School, attended Lawrence University and received a Diploma in Nursing from Wesley Hospital in Chicago in 1949. She lived most of her adult life in Alton, Illinois. She was the middle daughter of the late Earl Todd Young and Alice Erickson Young, preceded in death by her brother William Young and sister Vennen Young Ward. She moved to the Peoria area in recent years to be near her daughter, Nancy White.Visitation will take place Saturday, September 9, from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, Illinois. A service celebrating her life and faith will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at Upper Alton Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Lovejoy United Presbyterian Church in Wood River, Illinois; the Methodist Village in Godfrey, Illinois; Alton Symphony Orchestra, Saint Anthony's Hospital Auxiliary in Alton or Boy Scout Troop #1 in Alton.Online condolences and guest book may be found at www.eliaskallalandschaaf.com
