Joyce L. Young, lovingly known as “Big Grandma”, age 81, of Collinsville, IL, born February 23, 1942, in East Saint Louis, IL, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at her home.
Joyce was very fond of her time working for the Internal Revenue Service. Having started out as a typist and retired as a Branch Chief Manager 41 years later.
She loved to spoil grandchildren and family. Joyce enjoyed movies, bargain hunting, weekly dinners with friends, and was always willing to help anyone in any way possible. She was fiercely proud of her independence, especially in her later years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger E. Young, Sr.; her parents, E. Rogers and Lausanne, nee Johnston, Wilson; a son, Roger E. Young, Jr.; a daughter, Julie M. Carlson; and a sister, Doris Ann Bourland.
She is survived by three grandchildren and their spouses, John (Chandra) Carlson, Matthew (Michelle) Carlson, Anthony (Lindsey) Womack; and six great-grandchildren, Gage Carlson, Faith White, Hunter Womack, Oliver Womack, Lydia Womack, and Matthew Carlson, Jr.
A celebration of life and luncheon will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 1 – 5 p.m. in the Oak Room at the American Legion in Collinsville, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to be made to American Cancer Society and can be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville IL 62062, or to leave an extra big tip to your server next time you eat out.
