Joyce E. Burk, 79, died at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at Robings Manor in Brighton. Born June 23, 1929 in Godfrey, she was the daughter of Albert J. and Flora E. (Lewis) Maxeiner. She attended Mason grade school in Godfrey and graduated in 1947 as valedictorian from Brighton High School. She retired from P.N. Hirsch Company in north Alton after 20 years of service. Mrs. Burk was a member of the Salem Presbyterian Church in Alton where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the quilting club and mariners club and was the pianist and organist for many years. She was involved for over 50 years with Home Extension and held numerous offices including past county president and also volunteered for the Crisis Food Center in Alton. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and was known for her sugar cookies and was an avid gardener. On February 21, 1948 in Brighton, she married Charles A. Burk. He survives. Also surviving are three sons; Mike Burk of New Haven, MO, Bruce Burk and Regina Haasis of Champaign, IL and Stan Burk and his wife Alice of Decatur, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one brother, Kenneth Maxeiner of Godfrey and two sisters; Norma Wolf of Bunker Hill and Shirley Lyerla of Fosterburg. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Reverend Tom Olney will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Salem Presbyterian Church in Alton.
