Josephine Johnson

Josephine Lorene (Foiles) Johnson, 90, of Glen Carbon (formerly of Shipman), born May 6, 1929 in Wood River, Illinois to the late Orville and Elizabeth (Roberts) Foiles passed away at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at Eden Village, Glen Carbon, Illinois surrounded by her family.  Josephine married Donald Lee Johnson on March 8, 1947, in Piasa, Illinois.

While in high school, Josephine was a waitress at Dingledine’s Restaurant and a telephone operator in her hometown of Shipman, Illinois. Later in her life, she used her loving and compassionate skills to work as a nurse’s aide at Carlinville Area Hospital. After raising her family, her next career was working on road construction as a laborer for the Shipman Labor Local Union. Josephine was very talented in every endeavor and enjoyed her garden, sewing, and even took up basket weaving. She taught many how to weave baskets and has left that amazing legacy to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was a loving and devoted housewife who would do anything for her family and many others. No one was ever a stranger to Josephine. Her friendly demeanor made her approachable by anyone she met.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughters Cathy (Gary) Watson, Peggy Johnson, Shirley (Steve Geary) Boatman, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and son Donald Ray Johnson, grandson Brett Allen Watson.

Per her wishes, Josephine will be cremated and has requested no services.
