Joseph Nord

Carrollton |

Joseph Bernard Nord, 84, died at 7:15 a.m., Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home.

He was born in White Hall, Illinois on July 2, 1939, and was one of three children born to Adam and Catherine (Behnen) Nord.

He attended Hanover country school, St. John's Grade School and St. John's High School in Carrollton until its closing in 1956, and continued his senior year at Greenfield High School, graduating with the Class of 1957.

He entered the United States Army in 1961, and after his discharge returned home, and married the former Carol Ann Lahey on June 29, 1963 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville. Together they have been blessed with 60 years of marriage, and built a foundation of love and dedication for their three children and grandchildren, raising his family on the farm, where he firmly believed that "life was just better".

Joe was very community oriented and dedicated his talents and time to numerous organizations. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1996, even serving as Grand Knight at one time. He served on the Greene County Fair Board, and organized and ran the Demolition Derby. He was a past member of the Greene County Farm Bureau board, was active with the Carrollton Lions Club, sat on the Farmers Livestock Marketing board, and was the St. John's Alumni President for many years, Greene County Township Officials, and the West Central and Illinois Development Boards. Needless to say, Joe liked meetings.

He took great pride in his Catholic faith, and was a faithful member of St. John's Catholic Church in Carrollton, where you could always find him at 8 o'clock Mass, serving as an Usher for many years.

Joe said that he was a farmer and a part time politician. In 1971, he was elected Supervisor of Linder Township. He enjoyed that so much that he ran for and was elected to the Greene County Board, serving as Board Chairman for many of those years. Many "Let's Go With Joe" signs were placed throughout Greene County through the years, and Joe dedicated over 40 years to the residents before "retiring" from the board in 2019. He was a strong Republican, and was proud that he served the people of Greene County, regardless of political affiliation.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Ann Nord of Carrollton; his three children and their spouses, David and Patti Nord, Denise and Chad Sanders, and Daniel and Camey Nord, all of Carrollton; six grandchildren, Derek, Blake, Erika, Benjamin, Nathan and Catelyn Nord; two sisters and a brother in-law, Mary Gillingham of Carrollton and Betty and John Thien of Greenfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Nathaniel Lynn Nord in 2004; his father in-law and mother in-law, Benjamin and Dorothy Lahey; a sister in-law, Mary Ellen Lahey; and five brothers in-law, Gerald, Thomas, Richard, Benjamin and John Lahey.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Carrollton, where a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday.

Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Carrollton.

Memorials may be given to the St. John's Catholic School Building Project or to Masses.
