Joseph A. Tonsor Jr., 79, died at 9:38 p.m., Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home after a period of declining health.
He was born in Westwoods, Jersey County, Il., on May 4, 1935, and was the son of Joseph A. & Cecelia (Schmieder) Tonsor Sr.
A U.S. Army veteran, Joe retired from Dixon Distributing in Godfrey, where he was employed for over 30 years, serving them as a driver as well as a salesman. He was a loyal family man, who was devoted to them as well as to his church.
He married the former Edith "Edie" Lehr on Nov. 25, 1961 at the St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Kamspville, and they have shared nearly 53 years together.
Surviving are his wife, Edie Tonsor of Jerseyville; a daughter & son in law, Angie & Mike Hancox of Quincy; two sons & daughters in law, William & Marcie Tonsor of Jerseyville, and Scott & Amy Tonsor of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren, Joe Hancox of Champaign, Adam Hancox of Quincy, Katie Hancox of Bloomington, Chrissy Tonsor, Ellie Tonsor, Valerie Tonsor, Abby Tonsor, and Hannah Tonsor all of Jerseyville; and two sisters, Lucille Hamblen of Jerseyville, and Edith Garland of Jerseyville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph A. Tonsor Sr.; his mother Cecelia "Ceil" Tonsor Groppel; a son in law, Charles "Chuck" Ascheman; two sisters, Janet File and Marcella Pohlman Schroeder; and a brother, John Robert Tonsor.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a Prayer Service will be read at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Monday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Fieldon.
Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville.
