JERSEYVILLE – John Steven “Jack” Schobernd Jr., 73, died peacefully at 12:45 a.m., Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jerseyville.

He was born on June 29, 1944 at home in Golden Eagle and was the son of the late John Steven and Elda (Bryant) Schobernd Sr.

Jack was raised in Golden Eagle and graduated with the class of 1963 from Brussels High School. He spent much of his adult life in Golden Eagle where he served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Hall in Brussels for many years.

In addition to his work with the Knights of Columbus, Jack was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time outdoors planting flowers and was employed as a Janitor with the Alton School District before his health began to deteriorate, forcing him to retire in 1986.

Later in life Jack reconnected with an old friend, Karen (Shafer) Carey, and it wasn’t long before their bond grew into something much more. The two married on October 14, 1999 in Brussels, at which time Jack moved to Jerseyville, where he has remained ever since.

Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Karen Schobernd of Jerseyville; three step-sons and their spouses, Mike & Elivia Carey of Jerseyville; Jeff & Kathy Carey of Brussels and Jason & Stacy Carey of Jerseyville; 8 step-grandchildren and a  step-great-granddaughter; a sister, Josephine Lawrence and a nephew, David Lawrence, both of Edwardsville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Charlee Jean Miller on February 26, 2016.

Per his wishes, no services will be held.
