John Reed
Alton | Save
John E. Reed, a devoted family man, respected financial analyst, and proud military veteran, passed away peacefully in Alton, Illinois, on Saturday, June 27, 2026. He was 83 years old.
Born in Centralia, Illinois, on August 11, 1942, John was the cherished son of the late G. Sid Reed and Florence (Janet) M. Reed. His life was a testament to hard work, integrity, and service to his family.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maribeth A. Reed, with whom he shared 60 wonderful years and countless cherished memories. Together, they created a loving home filled with laughter, joy, and love.
John is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law; Jeffery (Lisa) Reed of St. Charles, MO, Scott (Debbie) Reed of Moro, five grandchildren and their spouses; Drew (Helena) Reed, Amber (Sergio) Manzo, Matt Reed, Zach Edwards, Cassie Reed, and four great-grandchildren; Brookelyn, Ellie, Conor, and Mila.
John proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he pursued a career with Western Electric. During his time there, he continued his education, receiving an MBA and becoming a successful financial analyst.
John was a big sports fan, but the two teams he followed most faithfully were the St. Louis Cardinals and his high school alma mater, Centralia Orphans. He loved to take his family to games whenever he could.
Although John’s career and service were commendable, it was his role as a son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather that he held most dear. His caring nature and selfless love for his family were apparent in every action and every word. This practice of devotion built a legacy of love, kindness, and loyalty that will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026, at Gent Funeral Home in Godfrey. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, July 2nd, 2026, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, reflecting John’s generous spirit and his lifelong commitment to making the world a better place.
John will be dearly missed, but his indelible impact and the memories he leaves behind will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
