John M. Grounds, 68, passed away at 8:05 am on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at his home. He was born June 29, 1941 in Cave In Rock, IL, the son of John Gordon Grounds. He was also raised by his aunt Molly Hufsey of Sherrard, IL and his late uncle Herman Hufsey.

He married Cathy A. (Bogue) on June 30, 1962 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey, having spent 47 years together. She survives. John was employed at Laclede Steel, starting in the maintenance area then becoming a foreman, working there for 34 years and retiring in 1994. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Alton Lodge # 254. He was an avid hunter, especially deer and squirrel, fisherman, enjoyed watching sports especially the St. Louis Cardinals and spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Cathy he is survived by one daughter Teresa Grounds of Jerseyville; one son and daughter-in-law, John & Annette Grounds of Alton; two grandchildren, Katie and her husband Raymond Weber and Michael Rynders; one great grandson, Dameen Weber; one sister, Judy Kuehnel of Jerseyville; his little dog Rascal and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father; a son, Michael Phillip Grounds who was born on July 21, 1967 and lived for four day's; a brother, Gil Grounds; an infant sister and a half sister, Diane Grounds.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton. A funeral Mass will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton at 10 am on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, with Fr. Delix Michel S.S.L. officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Godfrey.
