John J. “Jack” Gainer, 98, died December 6, 2012 at Eunice Smith Home in Alton. Jack was born January 25, 1914 in Wood River, IL and was the son of Frank and Anna (Blustein) Gainer. He married Frances L. Ripley on October 12, 1940. She passed away on April 7, 1999. He was a graduate of The University of Notre Dame in 1935 and Washington University Law School in 1938. He was a Senior Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank and Trust prior to his retirement in 1986. Jack was a member of the Greatest Generation having served in the U.S. Army’s 88th Infantry Division during WWII in Italy. He is survived by three daughters, Frances Gainer, Martha Rende, both of Godfrey, Sarah (Michael) Collins of St. Louis, MO; a son, John (Dixie) Gainer, Jr. of Staunton, VA; six grandchildren: Michael Jr., Courtney, Kevin, Molly and Patrick Collins; Sarah Bulte of St. Louis; four great grandchildren: Colleen Willow Watt and Beckett Bulte, Michael III and Audrey Collins. All services will be private. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
