John Schwarte

Fortified with the sacraments of holy mother church, John Hade (Jack) Schwarte, 89, died on Sunday January 1, 2017 at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehab in Jerseyville, Illinois.

Jack was born on July 17, 1927 in Quincy, Illinois the son of the late Albert Bernard Schwarte and Hellen (Nell) (Hade) Schwarte and baptized at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Quincy by Father John J. Brennan.

Jack married Elizabeth (Betty) Daniels on September 15, 1956 at St. Mary’s Church in Alton, Illinois. They recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with a mass and reception at Ss. Peter & Paul Church.

A graduate of Little Rock College, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Jack was employed by the Social Security Administration for 30 years as a Field Representative in the Alton, Illinois District Office.

Jack was a lifetime member of the Alton Knights of Columbus Council 460; was active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society first in St. Mary’s Parish then in Ss. Peter & Paul Parish where he was Parish treasurer and Alton Deanery President.

Jack is survived by his wife Betty, his children and their spouses, Jack & Laurie Schwarte, Salem, OR, Mary & Quint Ehley, Marshall North Carolina, Patrick & Jennifer Schwarte, Anne Schwarte & Katy Schwarte, all of Alton; Joseph & Melanie Schwarte, Eugene, OR, and Dr. Michael & Ying Schwarte, Auburn, Alabama; Grandchildren, Emily Ehley, Alex, Molly, Hannah and Abby Schwarte, Grace, Joy & Olivia Schwarte; his sister Dr. Barbara Schwarte & her husband Dr. James Hutter of Broomfield, CO.

After retirement Jack was Eucharistic Minister and Lector at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Daily Adorer at San Damiano Adoration Chapel and volunteered at Crisis Food Center and St. Antony’s Hospital as a Courier and later as a hospice volunteer for 16 years.

Preceding Jack in death were his parents Albert Schwarte and Nell Schwarte.

Visitation will be from 4 pm to 7 pm Friday January 6, 2017 at Ss. Peter & Paul Church in Alton.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 am Saturday January 7, 2017 at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, 717 State Street, Alton.

Donations can be made to Ss. Peter & Paul School and St. Anthony’s Hospice or Masses.
