John Fugate

John Fugate, formerly of Fieldon, Illinois, passed away at his home in Dow, Illinois on Saturday, August 4 at the age of 80.  John was born to Tim and Nannie Bea (Gibbons) Fugate in Hannibal, Missouri on July 14, 1932.

John proudly served his country in the Army from 1952-1954.  He worked at the Grafton Boat Works until it closed.  He worked a brief time at Federal Steel, before going into business with close friends to form H, F & L Logging.  He worked there until an accident forced him to retire in 2004.  He loved the outdoors, walking the timber, mushroom hunting and travelling.  He also loved spending time with friends and family.  He was a loyal friend and proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He was also a member of the American Legion. 

John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty (Long) Fugate.  Together, they raised five daughters, Kim (Bruce) Kendall of Pawnee, IL, Debra Fitzgibbons of Alton, Penny (Marion) Gauntt of Jerseyville, Pam (Chey) Hartley of Dow, and Mitzi Fugate of Alton.  He is also survived by a brother, Kenny (Sharon) Fugate of Hannibal, six grandchildren, Jon (Heather) Stinnett, Aaron (Olivia) Kendall, Jacob (Whitney) Kendall, David (Kelsie) McCoy, Joseph Gauntt, and Liz Gauntt and Joshua Deneef-Hartley.  He is also survived by six great-grandchildren; Caleb, Canaan and Addelyn Kendall, Annabelle Stinnett, Arianna and Hayden Manning-Gauntt.

John was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; Donnie, Jimmy, Oliver and Jack Fugate, and two sisters; Marcella Jones and Erma Hagen.

A visitation will take place on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Fieldon United Church of Christ in Fieldon, Illinois from 10 a.m. until the celebration of John’s life at 12 p.m.  Burial will take place at Indian Creek Cemetery in Hamburg, Illinois.  Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  Memorials may be made to the Traumatic Brain Injury Institute of Illinois.
