Godfrey—JoAnn Schmitt, 84, formerly of Cottage Hills, passed away at 11:02 p.m. Monday, September 4, 2017 at her home.
Born May 1, 1933 in Hammond, Ind., she was the daughter of William G. Ringering, Sr. and Viola Ann (Herring) Ringering.
She married Jerome “Jerry” Schmitt Feb. 6, 1954 at St. Patrick’s Church in Alton. He preceded her in death May 23, 2010.
JoAnn was a member of the first 4-year graduating class of Civic Memorial High School. She worked at Owens-Illinois in Alton when she met Jerry. She was a homemaker after they married. She was an active member of the former St. Kevin’s Catholic Church in Rosewood Heights. She sang in the choir, helped with the RCIA program and was on the decorating committee. When St. Kevin’s closed, she became active in the choir at Holy Angels Parish in Wood River. She also was a member of the Bethalto Fire Dept. Women’s Auxiliary for several years.
Survivors include her children, Thomas (Rebecca) Schmitt of Irving, IL, Rose (Jerry) Kline of San Antonio, TX, Christine (Glenn) Wissehr of Bethalto, and Monica (Jeffrey) Roth of Hailey, ID; grandchildren Crystal (John) Taylor of Pearland, TX, Andrew (Stephanie) Schmitt and Adam (Evelyn) Schmitt, all of Irving, Anthony Wissehr of Bethalto, Justin Kline of San Antonio, Milissa (Jacob) Mayden of Alton, and Stephen Roth of Hailey, ID; two great grandchildren, Hunter Taylor and Talon Schmitt; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Ringering of Alton; many nieces and nephews; and her Morningside of Godfrey Family.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, William G. Ringering, Jr.
Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10 at Paynic Home for Funerals.
Father Donald Wolford will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
