Jerome L. "Jerry" Schmitt, 79, passed away at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 25, 1931 in Chaffee, Mo., he was a son of Leonard P. and Mary Louise (Ziegler) Schmitt.

The U.S. Army veteran married JoAnn Ringering Feb. 6, 1954 in Alton. She survives.

Jerry worked as a mold design engineer for Owens-Illinois for 33 years before his retirement in 1985. While employed, he was fortunate to work in Venezuela, Columbia, and Brazil.

He was a founding member of St. Kevin’s Catholic Church in Rosewood Heights and was very active in the church, teaching RCIA and serving with the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Rebecca Schmitt of Irving, Ill.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Rose and Jerry Kline of San Antonio, Tex., Christine and Glenn Wissehr of Bethalto, and Monica and Jeffrey Roth of Hailey, Idaho; seven grandchildren, Andrew and Adam Schmitt, Crystal and Justin Kline, Anthony and Milissa Wissehr and Stephen Roth; a sister, Ethel Rose Iannuzzi of Woodbridge, Ct.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Sr. Mary Norbert Schmitt, Sr. Pancratia Schmitt, and Frieda Revelle; and two brothers, Rudolph and Benjamin Schmitt.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, May 27 at Paynic Home for Funerals, with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Father James Flach will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be given for masses, the American Diabetes Association, Holy Angels’ Haiti Fund, or St. Vincent DePaul Society.
