Janie Marie Hanneken, 61, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at SSM Health St. Louis University in Saint Louis, MO.
She was born on July 22, 1964, in Alton, IL, the daughter of Troy and Helen (Clark) Smith.
Janie will be fondly remembered for her great love of animals and gardening. She loved to bird watch and knew most of the birds in Illinois. She also enjoyed cooking. Janie wrote often, especially poems. She loved Blitz, her dog, and her nine cats.
Janie is survived by a daughter, Brittany Hanneken of Bethalto; two sisters, Cathy Brownlee of Cottage Hills, and Rosemary Courtoise; and her good friend, Robert Davis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Teeny; and two brothers, Tony and Wade.
Cremation services will be provided by Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home of Bethalto.
