Janice K. Ridder, 80, died peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at High Point Residence in Jerseyville.
Born October 30, 1945, in Des Moines, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Herman D. and Margaret E. (Knapp) Miller. A 1963 graduate of North High School, Janice began her career as a secretary for her father’s business, Herman Miller Realty.
Janice dedicated many years to a meaningful career at Drake University in Des Moines, serving as an administrative assistant across several campus departments. She was incredibly proud that her work there provided the opportunity for all three of her children to attend college tuition-free.
In 2003, Janice moved to Alton, Illinois, where she met Walter “Bud” Ridder while attending Heartland Baptist Church. They married on January 16, 2004, in Mesa, Arizona, and shared 18 years of love and companionship until his passing. Janice later moved to High Point Residence in Jerseyville, where she enjoyed the support of dear friends and staff. Her family was the center of her world, and she also found great joy in her cherished dogs, Buddy and Rascal.
She is survived by her siblings, Judy Rhoads and Dennis Miller; two children, Rollie C. (Jaime) Madison II and Jana L. Madison; a son-in-law, Fred “Bud” Pohlman; five grandchildren, Fred (Jordyn) Pohlman IV, Sam (Emily) Pohlman, Luke Pohlman (Stacia Dick), Dakota Britt, and Rece Madison; and a great-granddaughter, Eleanor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Walter “Bud” Ridder and Richard “Dick” Whiton, and her beloved daughter, Julie K. Pohlman.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 2, at Heartland Baptist Church in Alton. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. with a ceremony at 11 a.m.
