Janet Marie Schantz, age 80 of Maryville, IL, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023.
She was born on November 30, 1942, in Edwardsville, IL, the daughter of the late Jerome and Helen (nee Bartels) Vieth.
Janet was a graduate of Edwardsville High School, Class of 1960. She married John S. Schantz on September 14, 1963, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville. He preceded her in death on December 13, 2020.
Early on, Janet was a beautician. She and her husband built the Dairy Queen Restaurant in Glen Carbon in 1984 and 1987 built the one in Troy. They owned and operated both restaurants until selling the Glen Carbon restaurant in 2000 and then Troy in 2009. Later in life, she worked part-time at Sam’s Club in Glen Carbon.
She and her husband were snowbirds wintering at Alamo Rose RV Resort in Alamo, TX. They enjoyed traveling and camping in their RV at Cool Creek Resort. After his passing, she enjoyed traveling with her family.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Edward Schantz; and a sister, Mary Stahlhut.
Surviving is her four children: Lisa Pashea of Maryville, IL, Jeff Schantz of Highland, IL, Jim (Ginger) Schantz of Collinsville, IL, and Lori (Tom) Bruggemann of Highland, IL; six grandchildren: Justin (Claire Marchal) Bruggemann, Adam Pashea, Alyssa (Jorden Buske) Bruggemann, Kaitlynn Schantz, Emilee Schantz, and Nicholas Schantz; two sisters: Darlene (Roy) Stahlhut of Edwardsville, IL and Judy (Doug) Dorner of Alton, IL; a brother-in-law, Larry Stahlhut of Edwardsville, IL; nieces and nephews.
Memorial visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville.
Private graveside services will be held on Friday. The interment will be at Marine Cemetery in Marine, IL.
