James Wilkinson

James “Hub” Wilkinson, 77, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, with his devoted wife at his side. Born on August 16, 1948, in West Frankfort, IL, Hub was the beloved son of the late Herschel and Jamesena (Wasson) Wilkinson.

One of a set of twins, Hub grew up in a lively, love-filled home where family, laughter, and community shaped the man he became. His childhood fostered in him a lifelong devotion to family, a passion for sports, and a generosity of spirit that touched everyone who knew him.

On November 27, 1982, Hub married the love of his life, Mary Beasley, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granite City. Together they shared more than four decades of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Hub dedicated over 30 years to Granite City Steel, retiring from the financial department with the respect and admiration of his colleagues. He also enjoyed a remarkable 45-year career at Fairmont Racetrack, where he retired as Head of Admissions—a role that perfectly suited his warm smile and welcoming presence.

A proud supporter of the University of Illinois, Hub’s heart belonged to the Fighting Illini. His voice rang out during basketball season, filled with excitement and loyalty. He was equally devoted to his St. Louis Cardinals, following every season faithfully and sharing his love of the game with nieces, nephews, and friends alike.

In addition to his parents, Hub was preceded in death by his twin sister, Jane Leech, and his brother, John Wilkinson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Wilkinson of Granite City; his dear brother and sister-in-law, Bryan and Sandy Wilkinson of Glen Carbon, IL; brother-in-law, Doug Leech of New Lenox, IL; sister-in-law, Mary Wilkinson of West Lafayette, IN; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike and Beth Beasley of Chesterfield, MO; his treasured nieces and nephews—Michael, Caroline, Meredith, Melinda, Jed, Chris, Allison, Michael, Michelle, Jenny, and Jessi—as well as many great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, and countless dear friends.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, with a funeral service following at 12:00 p.m. led by Father Stephen Thompson. Hub will be laid to rest at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL.

Memorials in Hub’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Holy Family Catholic Church and will be accepted at the chapel.

Hub will forever be remembered for his devotion to family, his passion for sports, and the joy he brought into the lives of others. His legacy of love, loyalty, and kindness will continue to shine through everyone blessed to have known him.
