James Watson

James R. Watson, 91, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away at 12:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in Sorento, Illinois.

Born on November 7, 1934, in St. Louis, Missouri, he was the son of the late Roy Watson and Norine (Sossion) Galvin.

James devoted 25 years with A.O. Smith and 15 years of his life to McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft, where he took great pride in his work and craftsmanship. He retired as a respected member of IBEW Local 309 and Local 1 after over 40 years of service as an electrician. In addition to his career, he honorably served his country in the United States Air Force Reserves.

A man of strong faith and compassion, James was a member of Net Community Church in Staunton and a longtime, faithful member of New Creation Fellowship in Mitchell. He found great purpose in serving others, especially through his work with the church food pantry, where he was always willing to lend a helping hand to ensure no one in his community went without. His generous heart also led him to support Operation Smile.

James had a love for working with his hands and could often be found woodworking or tinkering on projects. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including fishing, and had a special affection for animals, especially the dogs he cherished throughout the years.

He is survived by his five children, Sandra Ketcherside, Marilyn White, Michael (Shoiney) Watson, Larry (Pam) Watson, and Richard (Neta) Watson; a devoted granddaughter, Lori (James) Osborne; many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; along with extended family members and many dear friends.

In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Kenneth Ketcherside, and a sister, Jeanette Hoffman.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Bob Semanik officiating.

Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights.

Memorials may be made to the New Creation Fellowship Food Pantry. In honor of James, contributions of non-perishable food items will also be accepted at the services.
