James Varner

James Madison "Matt" Varner, age 76, of Herrin, passed away at his home in Herrin.

He was born Sunday, October 2, 1949, in Belleville, Illinois, a son of James Rutherford and Betty Helen (Shaw) Varner.

Matt was a former resident of Alton, IL before moving to Herrin in the late 1970s, where he made his home and built a life centered on family, hard work, and service. A proud veteran, Matt was a member of VFW Post 1567 in Herrin. Until his retirement, he worked as an HOD Carrier for Laborers' Local 773 in Marion, IL - a job he carried out with dedication and pride. Matt was a loving father, grandfather, and beloved brother. He found joy in motorcycles, camping, and vintage automobiles. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family. Whether it was around a campfire, in the garage, or at the family table, Matt made every moment count. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, and by all who knew his loyalty, his laugh, and his love.

Matt is survived by his daughter and son-in-law- Lisa (Varner) and Shawn Markins of Bethalto, IL; granddaughter- Sara Markins of Bethalto, IL; daughter- Madison Varner of Carterville, IL; brother- Michael & Toni Varner of Alton, IL; sister- Lynn (Darrell) Yearwood of Oakville, MO; sister- Denise (Scott) Varner-Duncan Okanogan, WA; and sister- Vicki (Jeff) Burger - Hawthorn Woods, IL.

Matt was preceded in death by father -James R. Varner and mother- Betty (Shaw) Varner.

Memorial visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at Gent Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Alton, IL.

Matt will be laid to rest with military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 12:30 PM, in recognition of his faithful and honorable service to our country.
