James Edward Matthews, the son of Nelson and Elsie Mae Matthews (née Leeper), was born December 6, 1936. He attended local schools through the eighth grade before beginning his working life. James faithfully served his country in the United States Army, completing a tour of duty in Germany before being honorably discharged.

On January 10, 1959, James married the love of his life, Ruth Ann Sterling. They shared many years together until her passing on February 14, 1990. Jim spent most of his career working as a machine operator at Box Board Packaging in Highland, Illinois.

Known as Jim to his family and friends, he enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved gardening, baking, and cooking, and treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren. Saturday nights were often reserved for card games with his siblings in Pleasant Mound, a tradition he greatly enjoyed. Jim also liked to sleep in when he could and relax while listening to classic country music from artists such as Tom T. Hall, Johnny Cash, Roger Miller, Roy Clark, and Hank Williams. Above all, he was happiest when surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his son, Kelly Matthews (Amy) of Greenville. Also surviving are his grandchildren Ashley Westbrooks (Michael) of Stafford, Virginia; Jolene Kabat (Adam) of Germantown; Ruth Matthews of Wood River; and Hunter Matthews of Greenville. His memory will also be cherished by his great-grandchildren: Reid, Parker, and Delaney Westbrooks, and Sophie, Sawyer, Caroline, and Kimber Kabat.

James was one of nine children. Surviving siblings include Guy, Alice, Betty, and Bob. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Kimberly Ann Spradling (Matthews), and by his siblings Beulah, Dean, Donald, and Carolyn.
