James "Jimmy" A. Kawainui, 78, passed away at 7:10 am July 1, 2009, at his residence.
He was born on March 29, 1931, in Honolulu, HI, the son of James A. and Caroline (Akau) Kawainui
He married Norma Long May 31, 1956, in San Antonio, TX. She survives.
He served as a communication expert with the U.S. Air Force for over 22 years. Jim was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints serving as a high Priest. He loved being with his family and friends, he was a member of the Elks Club in Pearl City, HI, and he enjoyed playing golf.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a son Victor A. Kawainui of Ewa Beach, HI, two daughters Valerie Thurman of Cypress Gardens, CA and Vanessa and her husband Allan Callio of Ewa Beach, HI, three grandchildren Brandon Callio, Tiffany Thurman, and Jessica Belaski, one great granddaughter Haley Madison, one brother Eugene and his wife Sybille Kawainui of Orlando, FL and one sister Bernice Poaha of Honolulu, HI.
His parents, one sister and one brother preceded him in death.
In celebration of his life visitation will be held Monday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. July 6, 2009 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 6500 Humbert Rd, Godfrey, IL with services following at 11 a.m. with Bishop Layne Jolley officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park.
Military Rites will be accorded through Alton VFW Post 1308.
Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation.
