James Gowin, 69, of Carrollton died Tuesday afternoon Feb. 2, 2016 at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton.
Born in Carrollton on Feb. 22, 1946, he was the son of the late Minor and Loretta Evering Gowin.
He married the former Barbara Sue DeShasier on July 9, 1966 in Carrollton and she survives in Jacksonville. Surviving are their granddaughters: Aliya and Anya Kurz of Ellisville, MO., a brother John (wife Gloria) Gowin of Wood River, a sister Doris Gowin of Bethalto, son-in-law: Matt Kurz of Ellisville, MO, sister-in-law: Kathy Gowin of Bunker Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents, his children: Craig Gowin and Angela Gowin-Kurz, brothers: William (Esther) Gowin, George Gowin, Garland (Darlene) Gowin, Joseph Gowin, sisters: Juanita (Robert) Lowrance, Diana (Jerome) McCauley, and two nephews: Brian Brinker and Jeffrey McCauley.
Jim had worked at Olin Corp. in Alton for 43 years. He loved hometown sports, coached his son’s little league baseball team and his daughter’s softball teams. He held many offices in the Carrollton #1 Booster Club, and helped with many activities. He loved the Lady Hawks and was official scorer for many years, and even kept score on his 51st birthday for the championship of the Lady Hawk tournament that year. He loved playing Santa on the Carrollton Square for the area kids. He loved caring for his granddaughters with his wife after their daughter’s death.
Memorial visitation will be from 10-11-30 A.M. on Saturday Feb. 6 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton. Mass will be celebrated following the visitation. Private family burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the College Fund established for Aliya and Anya at the Carrollton Bank.
