Irvin John Emert, age 94, went to be with the Lord on Friday evening, December 15, 2017 at Alton Memorial with his loving family by his side.
He was born on August 8, 1923 in Vandalia, Illinois, the son of the late John and Blanch (Bartimus) Emert. He married Nelda (Kroener) on August 28, 1953 in Vandalia, IL. She survives.
John proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy for three years. He attended Blackburn College and earned a BS and MS from Eastern Illinois University. He was a Science Teacher at CMHS for many years. John was a member of the Bethalto Presbyterian Church where he also served as an elder, the Madison County Retired Teachers, and the American Legion Post # 95 in Vandalia, IL, where he was the longest lifetime dues paying member and a member of 40/8. He played coronet in high school and earned the Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching westerns and outings for cherry milkshakes. John always had a ready smile and never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nelda; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy (Steve) Bivens; one grandson and his spouse, Michael (Shannon); one great granddaughter Eloise and another on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Verle Laswell.
Per his wishes, his body was cremated.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until the time of memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2017, at the Bethalto Presbyterian Church, 15 Nelson Drive, with Pastor Jerry Wray officiating.
In lieu of flowers and to honor his life, memorials may be made to Bethalto Presbyterian Church, Bethalto Volunteer Fire Department or Riverbend Family Ministries.
