Irene Lois Bowen, 96, passed away 4:45 a.m., Saturday, July 29, 2017 at her daughter's residence, where she had been living since 2015, where her family had gathered by her side to wish her "God speed".
Born in East Alton on September 8, 1920, she was the daughter of John and Lillian (Line) Stepson.
A homemaker until her children were grown, Irene then worked for the Madison County Circuit Clerk's Office for 25 years before retiring.
She married Frank LaVern Schenk, whom with she had two children, Karen (Frank) McAtee of Godfrey and Terry (Betty) Schenk of Wood River, then on August 16, 1985, married Virgil Bowen who died on April 11, 2002.
In addition to her children, she is survived by four step-daughters, Mary Kay Corbin, Debbie McEuen, Maureen Jones, Patricia Kerr; six grandchildren, Tammy (Tim) Reese, Tim (Heather) Bechel, Terry (Janel) Bechel, Kerry (Steve) Robinson, Sherry ( Mark) Maberry, Terry Schenk, Jr., and step-granddaughter, Amber Abert Hobbs; 22 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren.
Her parents; husbands; and a sister, Marian Burger preceded in death.
Cremation services will be extended in accordance with family wishes.
Private services and with burial in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens will follow at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN or a charity of one's choice.
