Howard Lee Luter, 86, of South Roxana, IL, passed away at 12:05 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton, IL.
He was born Mar. 25, 1931 in Pocahontas, AR to the late A.G. & Hassel (Legate) Luter.
He and Margaret Ann Shaver were married in Nov. 1948 and she preceded him in death in 1974. He then married Alma Norene Long Apr. 12, 1974 in Alton and she survives in South Roxana.
Mr. Luter loved music and dancing. He also enjoyed camping and fishing and he and Alma loved to travel to Florida in the winter. Howard was a shade tree mechanic, working on many cars over the years. He was a crane operator and foreman and retired from Laclede Steel after 42 years of service. He was very active in his community, serving as the Mayor and Police Commissioner of South Roxana and the Fire Department Board and was President of the Roxana Dad’s Club for 45 years, where he cared for the park as if it were his own yard.
In addition to Alma, he is survived by; 2 daughters: Jane (Russell) Manahan of Brighton, IL and Dana (Darrell) Talley of Bunker Hill, IL; 3 step-children: Marilyn (Jim) Leuty of Rosewood Heights, IL, Brenda (John) Dustman of Wood River, IL and Jerry Christeson of Bethalto, IL; 9 grandchildren: Aimee Manahan, Nicole Smith, Jessica (Mark) Schley, Kacie (Mike) Allen, Sandra Holt, Sarah (Andy) Friedrich, Emily Dustman, Jeremy (Jill) Christeson and Jason Christeson; a sister: Sue Archer; and a brother: Sam (Joy) Luter, all of Dixon, TN.
Memorial visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services at 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society or Diabetes Association.
