Horst K. H. Fischer, 80, passed away at 4:24 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital in Des Peres, MO.

Born March 12, 1938 in Stuttgart, Germany, he was a son of Hermann and Rosa (Wolfarth) Fischer.

Horst graduated high school in Germany and moved to the U.S.  He joined the U.S. Navy, and served this country.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1958 and served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph until 1962.  A machinist and operating engineer, he worked for a time at Olin Corp. and Shell Oil Co., retiring in 1998.  While still working full time at Shell and then after retirement, he worked part time for Dooling Machine Shop in Hartford.  He loved to travel, and every two years for the past 15-20 years, he went to Germany to visit relatives.  He enjoyed food, having a beer or two with family and friends, and hitting golf balls with his "ball bats", as he called his clubs.  He also loved to exercise, and after he joined Nautilus in Alton, the friends he made there became his second family.

Horst married Shirley June Smith on Aug. 12, 1957.  They divorced on Sept. 23, 1975.  He married Dolores J. (Hillman) Linders on March 3, 1977 in Edwardsville.  She survives.  Also surviving are a daughter, Shelly (Terry) Lohr of Godfrey, a son, Mike (Gina) Fischer of Wesley Chapel, FL; two stepsons, Bob (Katerina) Linders of Port Richey, FL and Dave Linders of Scottsdale, AZ; his grandchildren, Barry Linders, Chad (Jessica) Linders, and Kyle Linders, Kirstyn (Peter) Muldoon, Kristoffer Fischer, Kari Lohr, Mackenzie Gibbs and Nick Borokhov; five great grandchildren; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wolfgang Fischer.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where Pastor Tim Pate will officiate services at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
