Homer J. Vowels Jr., age 88, passed away at 4:10 am on Monday, January 8, 2018, in Eunice Smith Home in Alton

He was born on August 13, 1929 in Edwardsville, the son of the late Homer J. and Edythe Mae (Betts) Vowels Sr.  Homer married Jeannette M. (Conway) on December 22, 1969 in Alton, she survives.

Homer was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.  He was employed as a teacher for the Alton School District for 26 years and was a musician for 50 years.  He enjoyed reproducing his antique furniture and tools, fishing, hunting, farming and raising and training donkey’s, hand making pull carts for them to pull.

Besides his wife, Homer is survived by seven children and their spouses, James (Deborah) Vowels of IL, Richard D. Vowels of AZ, Roseanna (Gerald) Cain of Karnak, IL Vicki (Patrick) Powell of Vista, CA, Mary Louise McElroy of Godfrey, Lorraine (Terry) Gabriola of Godfrey and Lora Lee (Jay) Palmer Levenworth, KS; one sister, Lorraine Williams of VA; 17 grandchildren;30+  great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Patricia Smith and Ruth Koewing.

Visitation will be from 10 am until time of the celebration of life service at 11 am on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Rev Gerald Cain officiating.
