Homer Edward Markel, 85, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Born August 29, 1928 in Alton, he was the son of Ira and Cecil (Gates) Markel. He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force during the Korean War. In 1983 he retired from Owens-Illinois as a mold maker after 33 years of service. He attended Brown Street Baptist Church and a former member of the VFW Post 1308. Surviving are six children, Linda Hirsch (Kevin) of Fults, IL, Jim Markel of St. Louis, MO, Rick Markel of St. Louis, MO, Homer “Chip” Markel (Leslie) of Carterville, IL, Art Markel of Sparta, IL, and Michelle Groves (Keith) of Waterloo, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a great granddaughter due in October of this year, one brother, Arthur Markel, three sisters, Dorothy Minks (Bill) of Alton, Clara Duncan (Jerry) of Alton, and Ginny Abbott (Edgar) of Alton, and a sister-in-law, Betsy Markel of Godfrey and many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Jack Markel, and a sister, Marie Markel. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Andre’ Dobson will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Online guestbook and information may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com
