Herbert Hoover Varble

Herbert Hoover Varble, 84, died at 4:50 a.m. Friday, April 10, 2015 at his home in Godfrey. Born November 10, 1930 in Michael, IL, he was the last surviving child of John and Grace (Lankford) Varble. Mr. Varble served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean Conflict. He graduated in 1952 from Ranken Trade School with a degree in radio and T.V. repair. Mr. Varble had much to be proud of. He was a lifelong resident of the Alton area and was a self-made American who ran his own business for 43 years. Varble TV was a fixture in the local area for televisions and electronics. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey and the North Alton Godfrey Business Council. He was a member of and served as president for one year of the Godfrey Lions Club and was a 4th Degree member of the Alton Knights of Columbus. He was an avid fisherman and also volunteered for Alton Memorial Hospital for seven years. On May 22, 1954 he married the former Alice Ann “Sani” Lawson in Alton. Together they have three children, all of whom live in the local area; Greg Varble (Leann) of Godfrey, Ralph Varble of Alton, and Susan Vandevord (Dan) of Alton, 11 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Hirl Varble and a sister, Edna Rose Varble. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Father Steve Pohlman will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Ambrose School.
