Henrietta L ( Holly) Young was born in Peoria, IL on August 7, 1920 to Lee and Daisy (Butler) Holly. At the age of 7, Henrietta was adopted and raised by Charles and Willine Mayes.
Henrietta attended Peoria Public Schools. She was employed at Holly Dress Shop, Arlan’s Department Store, and Olin’s Corporation until her retirement. Henrietta was a member of Pride of Alton 1572 Paradise Temple #1207 since 1976. During her membership, she served as a Trustee.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church in Peoria, IL. Henrietta united with Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Alton, IL under the leadership of Reverend J.R. Johnson. Through the years, she served as an announcement clerk, superintendent of Sunday school and teacher, Echo’s choir, and on the Missionary Society Board.
On Friday, September 9, 2016 our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great - great grandmother and friend responded to our Heavenly Father’s call and slept away at Rosewood Care Center. Henrietta was blessed with ninety-six years of service.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she is preceded in death by a daughter Donna Jean Richard and two grandsons Darryl Williams and Alfred “Tanky” Talbert.
She leaves to cherish her fond warm memories, three daughters, Sharolyne White of Alton, IL, Sandra (Mike) Ramsey of Alton, IL, Freddie Lee (Charles) Miller of Orlando, FL, one son Robert Harrison of Edwardsville, IL, seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, six great – great grandchildren, a special friend Maria Harrington, and a special godson Darryl McElroy.
Visitation will convene Sunday, September 18, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will be held Monday, September 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Upper Alton Cemetery. Pastor John W. Buford will officiate.
