Helen M. Evans, 98, died on February 12, 2024 at Windsor Memory Care in Celebration, Florida. She was born September 18, 1925 in Alton, IL., the daughter of the late Marion and Clara (Schroeder) Whitten. On March 26, 1948 in Alton, she married John C. Evans III and he preceded her in death, April 12, 1988. Surviving family: Stacie Machnikowski (George) of Kissimmee, FL., John Evans IV of Hilton Head, SC., Hollace Evans of Okatie, SC., one daughter-in-law, Debbie Evans of Sandy, UT., eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded by her siblings; Lois Hornsey, Louise Naughton and Irving Lee Whitten and by one son, Jeffrey Evans. 

Helen was an exceptional corporate spouse and supported her family as they moved to build her husband’s career. They lived in Illinois, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and Hazelmere, England. Helen entertained family and friends and ensured each guest had a meaningful experience in each location that included local history, culture and art. In retirement, Helen lived in Hilton Head, SC. and Celebration, FL. She designed jewelry, worked in ceramics and became an accomplished painter. She left behind an amazing portfolio of her work for all to enjoy. Helen was very active throughout her life. She was an avid tennis, bridge and scrabble player. She earned an associate degree in Arts from DuPage County College. She worked for the Illinois Children’s Home, Western Cartridge Company and Reno and Wright Attorney-at-Law. Helen volunteered for the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Boy and Girl Scouts, Society of Bluffton Artists, Hilton Head Art League, Beaufort Society of Artist, Hilton Head Hospital and the Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army. Additional information and online guest book may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com.
