Harry Allen

Harry Leroy Allen, 91, of Shipman, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026, at home. “Leroy,” as he was known, humbly dealt with Kidney Dialysis for 6 years. At peace, he decided he was ready to go on into his Heavenly home and had the Dialysis disconnected. His loved ones spent time gleaning from his understanding up until he left, they conversed with him, and together they laughed at his memories he shared as they shared what he meant to them during his lifetime.

Leroy was born on December 31, 1934, in Springfield, the son of the late Harry Woodrow and Agnes Lenora (Pottinger) Allen. The Grandson of Roy and Martha Pottinger who he dearly loved and cared for.

Leroy grew up in Virden, IL attending Virden Schools. He worked while in school at the Virden Bowling Alley setting up pins. He could be found with his younger siblings, Butch, Donnie, Aggie and Brenda on any given day helping one of them learn how to do something like – ride a bike backwards, put a worm on a hook, clean up a car all shiny, ride a horse home and give them rides – he involved them in his life making memories now that are precious.

Leroy later worked at the Kroeger Store on the Virden Square for a number of years where shoppers loved him being helpful or cracking a joke and making them smile. Everyone liked Leroy and enjoyed his sense of humor.

His final job until retirement was working at the United Freedom Coal Mine. After retirement he worked at the Shipman Elevator.

Leroy married Joyce Edsall on June 22, 2005 and she survives.

Also, survived by five children, Cheryl (Cliff) Cameron, Darla (Norman) Wilfong, Jeff (LuWanda) Allen, Shawn Allen, and Danny Simons; four siblings, Kenneth (‘Butch’) (Pattie) Allen, Donald (Rose) Allen, Aggie Gyorkos and Brenda Allen (Rob Dwinnells); daughter in law Jodi Simons; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Donald Simons, siblings, Martha Broffey and her infant twin sister Myrna and Darlene Barnwell.

Visitation will be held from 10 am until the time of funeral service at noon on Monday, September 21, 2026, at Anderson Family Funeral Home in Brighton.

Burial will follow at Shipman Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to SAPA (Shipman Area Picnic Association)
