Gordon Lyle Heuer passed away at his residence in Shipman, Illinois, on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. He was 68.
He was born August 27, 1957, in Highland, Illinois, to Don and Corleen (Rust) Heuer. He was baptized on September 15, 1957, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Edwardsville and confirmed on May 30, 1971, at Zion Lutheran Church in Bunker Hill, where he remained a lifelong and devoted member. Over the years he served faithfully as both elder and trustee, giving generously of his time and steady presence.Gordon graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1975 and from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1979 with a degree in construction engineering. He worked as an estimator for Murphy Mechanical and later Haier Plumbing in Okawville until 2006, and then for Chapman Excavating in Bunker Hill from 2006 to 2009. Health struggles related to diabetes eventually limited his formal employment, but they did not diminish his involvement in the community. Since 2020, he served on the Macoupin County Board, where he was known as a thoughtful and fiscally conservative voice.Faith in God, and love for his family and friends, guided his life. Gordon was rarely the loudest person in the room, but he was often the most present. He remembered birthdays. He sent cards. He showed up. He had an easy smile, a ready laugh, and a listening ear for anyone who needed one. To his nieces and nephews, he was a steady and confident figure, equal parts calm, capable, and quietly cool.He enjoyed time on the family farm in Shipman, tending his garden, raising okra, sweet corn, and tomatoes, and keeping the yard meticulously mowed. He also took pleasure in caring for the cats that roamed the property and found simple contentment in everyday routines. He was a loyal baseball fan, a firm believer in conservative principles, and above all a follower of Jesus Christ. He is survived by his older brothers, Glade of Gillespie and Greg (Pam, deceased) of Wichita, Kansas; his younger sisters, Gayla Moore of Edwardsville and Glenda (Pat) Meehan of Bunker Hill; fifteen nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
