George Marshall Sr
George W. Marshall, Sr. departed this life on Saturday, December 16, 2017, at his home with family members. He was blessed with ninety-six years.Born, October 22, 1921, in Durant, Mississippi, to Johnny and Cora (Williams) Wash, both are deceased.He attended school in Durant, Mississippi, Holmes County. He served in the US Army during WWII with tours of duty in Burma and India and received an honorable discharge.After coming to Alton, Illinois, he met and married the love of his life, Bessie L. (Warr) Marshall on January 8, 1949 and unto this union six (6) children were born. She preceded him in death. They enjoyed fifty-five years together.He accepted a hope in Christ at an early age in Durant, Mississippi. In Alton, he became a member of Greater St. James Baptist Church, serving as a faithful" doorkeeper", for over seventy (70) years.He retired from. the Pepsi Cola Company and still worked part time for the former owners of Pepsi until 2015. He also worked for the "Lead Works", City of Alton, and St. Paul Episcopal Church.He was active in the schools, community, Church and neighborhood. Along with his family members and friends he will be deeply missed by his daughters: Anita Walker, Betty Hughes, and Georgia Marshall all of Alton; one sister, Emma Lee Gardner of Wilmington, Delaware; two sisters in law: Fannie Warr, Memphis, Tennessee and Hozell Frizell, Brighton. IL; special sons in law and daughter in law: James Clarks, Sr., Dennis Hughes, Sr., and Joan Marshall; adopted nieces Rosie and Sherri Parks; a special nephew Jeffrey (Lillian) Warr; and a special daughter, Evangelist Mildred Warren. There are 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 7 great -great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Henry and Charlie Frizell and Cleophus Wash; three sisters: Annie Lee Green, Rosie Mae Potts, Silver Lee Washington; two sons: Charles W. and George W. Marshall, Jr.: one daughter, Cora L. (Marshall) Clark.
Visitation will convene Saturday, December 23, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Saint James Baptist Church.  Interment will be held Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Upper Alton Cemetery with departure from Harrison Funeral Chapel at 9:30 a.m.  Online registry available at www.harrisonfuneralchapel.com
