George Lindsay Buis, 91, died at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehab in Jerseyville. Born March 19, 1923 in Windsor, MO, he was the son of Marcus L. and Viola (McCoy) Buis. Mr. Buis served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a pharmacist mate on an LST Landing Ship with another corpsman in the absence of a doctor. He was discharged from the Navy in February 1946 and went to work at The Western. Soon afterward he met and married Betty Bowman in March of 1947. She preceded him in death in 1972. They had two daughters, Rebecca McCurdy and Melissa Buis who also preceded him in death. In May 1977 he married Rosa Lee Whitaker. She preceded him in death in November 2010. Mr. Buis retired from the Olin Corporation as a pipefitter after over 40 years of service. Surviving is a son-in-law, John McCurdy of Scottsdale, AZ, two grandchildren, Josh McCurdy (Dawn) of Lockport, IL, and Jason McCurdy (Meredith) of Longwood, FL, and three great grandchildren, Alexis, Rebecca, and Joshua. Also preceding him in death was a brother, Jesse Buis, and three sisters, Bessie Lay, Mary Hodge, and Vera Wiegand. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton and continue from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2015. Jim Buis will officiate. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Online guestbook and information may be found at
