George Georgevits, 94, died at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at his home surrounded by his daughters. Born August 17, 1918 in Jersey County, he was the son of John and Katherine Georgevits. On December 31, 1940, he married the love of his life, Helen Marie Cason. They shared 62 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on December 30, 2002. George is survived by three daughters; Sherry (Don) Wallace, Kathy (Danny) Ralston, and Mary (Gary) Johnson, seven grandchildren; Sandy (David) Voss, Tammy (Randy) Boggs, Faron (Jill) Wallace, Kelly Wallace, Kim (Julian) Inniss, Nathan (Tiffany) Ralston, and Matthew Ralston, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. George served his country in WWII as a Sergeant in the Army and was a forward observer and radio operator. He settled in North Alton and lived there his entire life. He operated a service station at 9th and State Street for many years then moved to a location on Godfrey Road. In the early 1970’s he opened his own brake shop on Pearl Street in Godfrey. He always said there was never a day that he didn’t want to go to work. He was active in his church and community, and was a member of the Piasa Lodge #27. He especially enjoyed working with Pride on the Bucket Brigade. He loved to camp, fish, and garden. George loved his God, country and family. His life was an example to all who knew him. George said “I have had a full life and I am the luckiest man in the world.” Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013. Pastor Jame Hahs will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.
