George Gebhardt

George Francis Gebhardt, 94, passed away at 3:55 pm Monday May 30, 2016 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

He was born on August 23, 1921 in Balta, ND, the son of Francis “Frank” & Caroline (Zacher) Gebhardt. 

George married Mary Margaret Tuohy on December 28, 1943 in California and she preceded him in death on June 25, 1975.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, a former member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission, TX; and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus member.

George retired from the US Air Force after 24 years of service where he trained over 400 Fighter Pilots and flew 22 Different Planes. After his service in the military he taught at George Washington University and was the administrator for the Master’s Degree program for the military.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John & Sandra Lee Gebhardt of Annapolis, MD; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn & Steven DeVilliers of Alton; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Marissa) Griffin, Mary DeVilliers, James DeVilliers, and Danielle DeVilliers, Caroline (Barrett) Wood, Christopher George Gebhardt, Sean Gebhardt, Lea Peyton Gebhardt, Kim (Jacques) Furhmann, and Rev. Gordon “Keith” (Joanna) Breault; and twenty seven great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Marie Breault; two sisters, Lillian Bosch and Iris Bailey; and a brother, Allen Gebhardt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 pm Wednesday June 1, 2016 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Thursday June 2, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.

Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery in Hampton, Virginia.

Memorials may be made to St. Vincent DePaul at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.
