Gary Nagel

Gary T. Nagel, 62, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018, at his home in Wood River.

He was born on April 3, 1955, in Wood River, IL, the son of the late Alfred Nagel and Virginia (Harshbarger) Secrest of Wood River.  He married Rebecca A. (Hall) Richert on August 18, 1984 at Calvary Temple in Alton.

Gary is a veteran of the United States Army.  He worked for the Edwardsville School District for 17 years, doing maintenance and custodial work.  He also worked for Jefferson Smurfit for over 15 years as a boiler operator.  He enjoyed collecting guns and was a member of the NRA. He also enjoyed outdoor activities such as playing with his grandchildren, BBQing and sitting around the firepit with friends and family.

Along with his wife and mother, Gary is survived by four children; Joe (Dianna) Richert of Bunker Hill, Stephanie VanHoose of Wood River, Brian (Melanie) Nagel of Wood River, and Janie (Chris) McClellan of Rosewood Heights; three siblings, Paul (Mary) Nagel of St. Louis, MO, David (Terrie) Nagel of Columbia, MO and John (Kim Moore) Nagel of St. Louis, MO; twelve grandchildren, Michael (Anna) Richert, Sabrina (Kyler) Turner, Kaylee Richert, Faith VanHoose, Hailee VanHoose, Gracie VanHoose, Ashton VanHoose, Brenda Nagel, Jordan Nagel, Isaac Nagel, Rylee McClellan, and Brodee McClellan; two great grandchildren, Hunter and Sophia Turner; and his father-in-law, Kenneth E. Hall of South Roxana.

He was preceded in death by his father, a twin brother, Terry Nagel and his step-father Kenneth Secrest.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, where Pastor Terry McKinzie will officiate.  Military rites will be conducted by The Edwardsville American Legion Post 199 and The Edwardsville VFW Post 1299.

Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Glen Carbon.

Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital
