Gary Paul Runion, 65, died at 3:13 a.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born October 2, 1951 in Wood River, he was the son of Benjamin “Austin” and Lucy K. (Fast) Runion. Mr. Runion served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Quality Assurance Department of the U.S. Army in 2007 after 30 years of service. He loved fishing and bowling and was an avid solitaire player. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Barbara Martin Runion. Also surviving are two sons, Michael Godar and his fiancé Robin Lynn of Bethalto, and Steven Godar (Tracy) of Bethalto, five grandchildren, Emma, Ryan, Dane, Kayla and Zoey, two sisters, Sherry Blackard of East Alton and Connie Bell of Alton, many nieces and nephews as well as special friends, Candy and Wayne Mark. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until time of funeral service at 6:00 p.m. followed by full military honors by the VFW Post 1308, Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Pastor Jim Johnston will officiate. Memorials may be made to the COPD Foundation, the American Lung Association or the Alton VFW Post 1308.
