Gary Carl Goleanor, age 79, of Granite City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Highland Health Care Center. Gary was born on September 5, 1946, in Granite City, the beloved son of the late James and Mabel (Brannam) Goleanor. He was also the cherished grandson of the late James and Geneva (Bates) Goleanor and the late Joseph and Martha (Adkins) Brannam.
Gary proudly served his country in the United States Army as a medic, carrying the values of honor and dedication throughout his life. Following his military service, he devoted many years of compassionate care and commitment as a Nuclear Medical Technician at St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he retired after a long and meaningful career.
Gary found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved watching classic western movies, sharing conversations over a cup of coffee, and discussing politics and religion with anyone willing to join the conversation. He enjoyed reading the Bible and had a lifelong love of learning and discovering new things. Even in his 70s, Gary continued taking classes to learn JavaScript and Java. He had a well-known sweet tooth, especially when it came to chocolate ice cream, Trey’s pumpkin pie, and lemon meringue pie, which were some of his favorite treats. His greatest happiness, however, was found in spending time with his family, especially his cherished grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
Gary was a private person who valued the relationships he shared with family and friends. He loved being silly, laughing, and enjoying simple moments with the people he loved most. He was always willing to help anyone in need and generously donated to many charities throughout his life. His kind spirit and unwavering love will be forever remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Harry “Pete” Shepherd.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Trey Peck of Maryville; his treasured grandchildren, Alivia and Austin Peck; his sister, Barbara Shepherd of Granite City; his niece, Kimberly (Thomas Crescenzi) Shepherd; his beloved former wife, Sheri Goleanor of Edwardsville, whose love, friendship, and devoted care meant so much to him throughout his life; and his former wife and friend, Jane Isgrigg, and her family. Gary also leaves behind many extended family members, lifelong friends, and all who were blessed to know and love him.
In celebration of Gary’s life, a graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL.
Family and friends are asked to meet at Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon, IL., on Wednesday, at 12:30 p.m. and the funeral procession will leave at 12:45 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans. Donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
