Frederick William “Fritz” Pohlman Jr.

Frederick William “Fritz” Pohlman Jr., 81, died at 4:26 a.m., Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

He was born on February 21, 1936 in Deer Plain, one of five children born to the late Frederick William and Faye (Kamp) Pohlman.

Fritz was a lifelong resident of Golden Eagle and graduated with the class of 1955 from Brussels High School. Upon his graduation, he enlisted with the United States Army, serving our country honorably in the Korean War.

He married the former Carol Sue Wethington on October 3, 1959 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton and throughout their 58 years together, they have shared in the joys of raising their two children and the blessings of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren that followed.

Fritz was instilled at a young age with the values of hard work and commitment, and embodied those traits in everything he did. He worked for many years for Operating Engineers Local 513 in Bridgeton, MO, in addition to owning and operating the Golden Eagle Ferry from 1980-1996. Family was extremely important to Fritz, and he was very proud and honored to be a part of the third generation of family ownership in the ferry operations.

Surviving are his wife, Sue Pohlman of Golden Eagle; a son and daughter in-law, Frederick William “Fred” III and Julie Pohlman of Grafton; a daughter and son in-law, Stacey &  Dan Eilerman of Carrollton; 6 grandsons, Jay & Justine Eilerman of Carrollton; Drew & Mariah Eilerman of Raymond; Frederick William “Fred” Pohlman IV of Naperville; Sam Pohlman of Edwardsville; Hayden & Kayce Eilerman of Carrollton and Luke Pohlman of Lake Saint Louis, MO; 4 great-grandchildren, Brookelyn, Bailey, Bowen and Audrey; two sisters and a brother in-law, Janet Brichler of Trenton and Nancy & Alan Dickson of Moore, SC; as well as a brother and sister in-law, Dan & Debra Pohlman of Golden Eagle.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister in-law, Dale & Linda Pohlman; as well as a brother in-law, Ed Brichler.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville from 2 p.m. until time of Memorial Service at 4 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Jersey Community High School FFA or to BJC Hospice of Greene County.
