Evelyn Conway

Evelyn Conway, 101, of Godfrey, died at 5:10 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025 at LaBella of Alton. She was born, April 5, 1924 in East Alton, IL, the daughter of the late Gustave and Matilda (Kanter) Schmid. She was raised on a family's rural farm where her father was the farm manager.

In 1942, Evelyn graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School. After graduation, she worked briefly for Western Cartridge Company as a secretary. On November 30, 1944 in Wood River, IL. she married August F. Conway, and he preceded her in death on October 24, 2016. She and her husband settled in Godfrey, Belmont Village, where they raised their two sons, Richard and Dale.

Her family attended churches in Alton, including First Methodist Church, the First Congregational Church, and the Main Street Methodist Church. She loved hymnal music.

Evelyn's chief role in life was being the best wife, mother, and homemaker possible. She succeeded in all categories. She enjoyed all family activities, traveling, shopping, and playing card games. Her favorite was Kings on the Corners.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Dale P. Conway (Mary) of Louisburg, NC, four granddaughters: Beth Garnett, Kristin Moore, Erin Walker, and Courthey Harrell, all of Eastern NC, fifteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and one niece, Diana Grable of Godfrey. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Richard Conway and two sisters, Marie Pearson and Louise Clower. Graveside services will be private.
