Eugene “Gene” Stumpf, 71, passed away Sunday May 6, 2018 at Jersey Community Hospital.

He was born on February 26, 1947 in Calhoun County, Illinois the son of Jerome John & Wilma (Weishaupt) Stumpf.

Gene married Rose Ellen Smith on September 3, 1966 at St. Norbert’s Catholic Church in Hardin.

She survives.

He was a member of St. Norbert’s Catholic Church in Hardin and retired in 1995 from the State of Illinois where he worked as a Conservation Police Officer. He was also a Chief Deputy Sheriff in Calhoun county and served as the Calhoun County ESDA Coordinator and served on the Calhoun County Water Board.


Gene is survived by his wife, Rose; his mother, Wilma Stumpf Krysl of Batchtown; two daughters and a son-in-law, Paula & Gene Howell of Dow and Deb Stumpf of Jerseyville; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry & Tonya Stumpf of Batchtown; eight grandchildren, Erick, Matthew, Chevi and Chase Howell, Derick Stumpf, Madalyne Brown, Elliott Cheek and Dennis Stumpf; his four siblings and spouses, Elaine & Bill Titus, Terry & Dawn Stumpf, Michelle & Tim Wieneke and Bob & Michelle Krysl.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerome John Stumpf, a grandson, Dylan Howell and a sister, Barb Stumpf Van Doren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Thursday May 10, 2018 at Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Thursday May 11, 2018 at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Batchtown.

Burial will follow at St. Barbara’s Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Calhoun Area Ambulance Service.
