Erma Louise (Paul) Bernhard, 98, passed away at 6:35 a.m. Thursday, November 23, 2017 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton.
Daughter of the late Herbert and Tillie (Voumard) Paul, she was born in Fosterburg on February 2, 1919. She married Alroy John (A.J.) Bernhard on July 15, 1939 at Fosterburg Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1996.
Erma was a homemaker and worked side-by-side farming with her husband. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and being with her family. She also served in the Cradle Roll Department and Hostess Committee for many years at Fosterburg Baptist Church, and was known for her pie-making for the church dinners and for those who visited the church.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janice (Bob) Whiteside McCauley of Fosterburg and Beverly (Gary) Smith of Alton; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul (Paula) Bernhard of Fosterburg; six grandchildren, Eric (Rachel Hewitt) Whiteside of Charlotte, NC, Lisa (Sam) Whiteside Bracken of Wagoner, OK, Jill (David) Smith King of Joelton, TN, Jeff (Elaine) Smith of Oxford, AL, Marcus (Kaitlyn) Bernhard of Godfrey, IL, and Emily Bernhard of Ankeny, IA; seven great-grandchildren, Kylie, Caleb, Colin, and Kelah Smith and Aubrey, Emma, and Gideon King; one brother Floyd Paul of Shipman, IL; and one sister Lois Paul Bailey of Oak Ridge, TN.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers Harold and Marcey Paul, one granddaughter Kristi Smith, and a son-in-law David Whiteside.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday November 27, 2017 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.
Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday November 28, 2017 at the Fosterburg Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Smith and Pastor Troy Crain officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Fosterburg Baptist Church where she was a life-long and active member
