Ellen Verlene “Verg” Hicks, 73, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at 6:25 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013 at her residence in Alton, IL.
Born in Wayne County, MO on September 13, 1939, she was the daughter of Joe and Pearl (Hale) Daves.
On August 30, 1971 she married Gerald Hicks, he died October, 2000.
Verlene was a member of the Gospel Tabernacle in Godfrey. She had worked in the Bakery department at Mr. Bees IGA in Rosewood Heights; also for Wood River Hartford School District #15 as a cleaning lady. She was skilled at baking and always enjoyed serving others.
She is survived by two daughters, Dalia (Rick) DeWerff of Rosewood Heights and Printha (Chris) Walls of Coffeyville, KS; a son Nick (Jennifer) Aguinaga of Wood River; nine grandchildren, Tabitha, Eli and Adam Aguinaga of Wood River, Kayla, Kelsey and Kyle DeWerff of Rosewood Heights; Jessica, Elisabeth and Daniel Walls of Coffeyville, KS; five sisters, Jane Goff of Jerseyville, Rosemary Esparza of Alton, Betty (Jerry) Henderson of Brighton, Florence (Richard) Kline of Grafton, Melba Bick of Kane; four brothers, Junior (Gloria) Daves of Godfrey, Alfred (Tommie) Daves of Godfrey, Leonard (Anna) Daves of Ellisville, MO, Gary (Debbie) Daves of Catawissa, MO; many nieces and nephews including a very special set of twins which are the children of her brother Junior (Gloria) Daves, Jay (Tammy) Daves of Lakeland, FL and Joy (Doyle) Beck of Godfrey, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Eskell, Lloyd and Herschel Daves.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 29at the Gospel Tabernacle in Godfrey, where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, with Pastor Alfred Daves officiating.
Respecting her wishes the family requests that in lieu of flowers or contributions that a random act of kindness for someone in need would be a true honor to her memory.
Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of the arrangements.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Bethalto.
