Edward L. Herbstreit, 95, passed on into his eternal home at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Jerseyville Manor in Jerseyville, IL. He was born October 5, 1922 in Alton the son of the late Julius and Henrietta (Kellerman) Herbstreit. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Godfrey. Edward retired after 33 years as a machine operator with Jefferson Smurfit in Alton. On May 20, 1950 in Alton, he married Elsie (Buchanan) and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Susan Luly of Alton, three sons, Michael Herbstreit (Tina) of St. Louis, MO, Alan Herbstreit (Beth) of Godfrey, Jerry Herbstreit (Paula) of Moro, twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Gilbert, and Arthur Herbstreit and three sisters, Martha Dix, Louise Morris and Iona Clare Herbstreit. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Faith Lutheran Church in Godfrey. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by VFW Post 1308. Reverend Daniel Speckhard will officiate.
