Edward Bert Adkins Jr., 81, died at 6:50 a.m. Sunday, April 9, 2017 under the care of BJC Hospice. Edward was born October 22, 1935 in St. Louis, MO. The son of the late Edward and Ethel (Hammer) Adkins Sr. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Emma Jean Terneus, Barbara Gillihan and his brother, Russell Adkins. Ed is survived by his wife Carole (Burns) Adkins of 57 years, three sons and a daughter, Kimberly (Ralph) Freeman of Jerseyville, IL, Craig Adkins (Anna Summers) of Jerseyville, IL, Bert Adkins and (Christine) of St. Louis, MO, Jason (Amanda) Adkins of Godfrey, IL, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Ed Attended school in St. Louis, MO, graduating from Beaumont High School in 1953 and then served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1959. He opened and ran Adkins Ornamental Iron in Godfrey, IL and some of his detailed work can still be seen in and around the Alton area. Edward worked as a Pipefitter out of St. Louis Pipefitters’ Local 562, retiring as a brewery fitter from Anheuser Busch Brewery in 1996. He spent his retirement enjoying the company of family and friends, traveling, and playing golf with his sons. At Ed’s request, his body will be donated to Washington University in St. Louis, MO for the advancement of science.
