Edith Nelson

Edith R. Nelson, 94, passed away at 4am on Sunday, July 2, 2017, at her residence with her loving family by her side. She was born February 14, 1923, in Alton, the daughter of the late Frank Anthony and Teresa Ruth (Nation) Schenk. She married David Nelson on July 29, 1960, in Alton, and he survives. Other survivors include four daughters and sons in law: Sharon and Ted Sperry of Stuart, Florida, Carolyn and Jerry Robertson of Stuart, Florida, Sandy and Dennis Shaw of Rosewood Heights, Betty and Don Secor of Bethalto, three sons and two daughters in law: Bobby and Karri Hand of Hollywood Beach, Florida, Jimmy and Tonya Glisson of Old Town, Florida, Jeff Glisson of Brooksville, Florida, thirteen grandchildren, twenty – three great grandchildren, sixteen great – great grandchildren, and many other extended family and friends.

A homemaker, Edith was formerly employed at Walnut Grove Dairy in Upper Alton and Laclede Steel in food services, and worked many years helping her daughter at her business, My House Wall Papers in Wood River. She loved to read, go bowling, dance, sing, going out to eat, go to the movies, shop, play cards, and visit her children in Florida. Edith formerly served as an election judge. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and attended River of Life Church in Alton. She volunteered her time at Operation Blessing, Sovereign Grace Baptist Church, and at Enjoy Church in Alton. Her family was her top priority.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband: Ralph James Hand, a daughter: Kathy Godfirnon, a son: Ralph James Hand II, two grandchildren: Scott Gibbs, Darren Prehn, and her brother: Laverne Schenk.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 4pm until time of funeral services at 7pm on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Pastor Fred Church will officiate. In accordance with her wishes, following visitation cremation rites will be accorded.

Memorials are suggested to the 5A’s or to BJC Hospice.
