Dr. Abbas Assar

Dr. Abbas Assar Dr. Abbas Assar, MD, age 87, died at 11:26 p.m., Wednesday, July 31, 2019 in the Emergency Room at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born in Iran on October 1, 1931 to the late Saeid Hasham and Khanom (Agha) Assar and went on to obtain his medical degree  in Freiburg, Germany in 1958. He completed his internship in Trenton, New Jersey and received his training in general surgery in 1965 at Mount Holly, New Jersey, where he also completed his chief residency. He married Anita Sanctjohanser on September 10, 1960 in Jamaica, New York. Their 58 years of marriage have been blessed countless memories of time spent with their family throughout the years. The Assar's relocated to the area in February of 1969, making their home in White Hall, where Dr. Assar practiced medicine. He later opened an office in Jerseyville, relocating their family there as well in 1978. Throughout his long career, he worked in both private practice as well as at the White Hall Hospital and Jersey Community Hospital, providing many years of service to the community.  Dr. Assar was fluent in his native language, Farsi; as well as English and German; and in his later years had begun studying French, as well. After his retirement from the medical field, he enjoyed watching an array of television programs from Columbo to I Love Lucy; as well as any Country/Western film or anything featuring comedian, Jackie Gleason. He also enjoyed golfing, and became a fixture at the area golf courses, creating many lasting friendships along the way. Surviving are his wife, Anita and two children, Sabina and Lyn, all of Jerseyville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. ' 6 p.m., Tueday, August 6, 2019 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Private burial will take place at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
